It’s full steam ahead to Round 1 of the 2019 European Le Mans Series season at Paul Ricard this weekend for Christian Olsen. Over the past two days the young Dane took part in the official pre-season test with his new team RLR Msport (the reigning ELMS LMP3 class champion) at the Le Castellet circuit, and is now focused on ensuring he has a strong start to the season.
Driving for the first time publicly with his new ELMS teammates Martin Rich and Martin Vedel, Olsen and the team managed to complete 216 laps. The fastest time over the two days of track action was a 1:52.289 set on the first day by Olsen.
Olsen is looking to make further strides this season as part of RLR’s LMP3 effort, as the most experienced LMP3 driver in the team, about to embark on his second full season of LMP3 racing.
However, before the ELMS weekend begins on Friday at the 5.8 km circuit in Southern France, Olsen is back out on track today in his second RLR Sport Ligier JS P3. He will share the car with his father Tom Olsen for the first time, in the Le Mans Cup Test Day, held ahead of the opening round of the ELMS-supporting championship which will be held on Saturday afternoon.
Once today’s running is completed then it’s the ELMS-Le Mans Cup weekend proper, with Olsen set to do battle against two huge grids of cars.
This year’s ELMS field is 41 cars strong across the three classes, with 14 of them in the LMP3 class which Olsen will be racing in. The Le Mans Cup meanwhile, has a record field of 31 cars, and 21 LMP3 entries.
As well as getting nearly twice as much track time to last year by competing in Le Mans Cup as well as the ELMS, Olsen will be fighting for two championships this year with his new team.
Saturdays Le Mans Cup race is set to start at 16:00 ahead of the ELMS 4 Hours of Le Castellet on Sunday at 12:30 local time.
